How an online consultation works

  1. 1

    Choose a doctor

Browse the provider directory. Each profile shows the doctor's specialty, languages, location, consultation fee and reviews from patients they have seen. You can filter by specialty.

  2. 2

    Pick a time and pay

Choose an open time and pay the consultation fee with M-Pesa. If the doctor is available, your booking is confirmed straight away. If they are with another patient, they confirm it first and you pay once they have.

  3. 3

    Join the video call

At your time, open Care Bora and join the call from your browser. You can also message the doctor during the consultation. Care Bora does not record the call.

  4. 4

    Keep your records

Notes and any prescription from your visit are saved in your medical record so you can find them later. Where the doctor thinks it is appropriate, you can also receive a sick-off sheet, or use a prescription to order from the pharmacy where it is stocked.

What an online consultation is good for

Talking to a doctor by video works well for many everyday concerns, and for conversations that don't need a physical examination.

  • Advice and assessment for common, short-term illnesses
  • Follow-up after treatment, and reviewing medication you already take
  • Talking through test results or a diagnosis you have already received
  • Getting a sick-off sheet when you have been unwell
  • A second opinion, or a simple question you would rather ask than guess at

What it can't do

A video call cannot replace an examination, tests or emergency care. If your doctor decides you need to be examined in person, have a laboratory test, or go to a hospital, they will tell you so. That is a good outcome of the consultation, not a failure of it.

Who you will be seeing

Every provider submits their practice licence number and a copy of their licence, and our team reviews it before they appear in the directory. You can read exactly how this works on our page about how we verify providers, and you can check any clinician yourself on the public register of their regulator.

What it costs

Each provider sets their own consultation fee, and it is shown on their profile before you book. You pay by M-Pesa; no card is needed and there is no subscription.

Questions people ask

Is an online consultation as good as seeing a doctor in person?

For many everyday concerns it is a convenient way to get advice, an assessment or a prescription. It cannot replace an examination when one is needed, and your doctor will tell you if you should be seen in person or have tests.

Do I need to download an app?

No. Care Bora works in the browser on your phone or computer. You will be asked to allow your camera and microphone for the video call.

How do I pay?

With M-Pesa. You receive a payment prompt on your phone and confirm it with your M-Pesa PIN. We never see or store your PIN.

Will I get a prescription?

If the doctor decides medicine is appropriate, they issue the prescription through Care Bora and it is saved in your records. Prescription-only medicines still need a valid prescription when you order them.

Is my consultation private?

Yes. The video call is between you and your provider and is not recorded by Care Bora. Our privacy policy explains how we handle the rest of your information.
